Everyone knows the Spanish Costas; Costa Brava, Costa Blanca and so on. But mention the Costa de la Luz, (pronounced booth) or the Coast of Light and you will draw blank looks. Well, it is an absolute jewel, the one remaining stretch of coastline in southern Spain that has not succumbed to mass tourism and urbanization.
The region is the Atlantic coastline of Andalucia and runs from Gibraltar to Cadiz. Popular with Spanish holidaymakers, it is relatively unknown tot& British and Americans, principally because it is quite hard to get to. It is a 2-3-hour drive from Malaga. However, the development of Seville airport and the changes in flights to Gibraltar mean that the area will soon become more accessible.
A car is essential; the roads are now very good and you need your own wheels to get around and to fmd the more remote beaches. There are some superb tourist sites to visit. Gibraltar is the obviols foe, and although spectacular it is a little overrated as a destination in my view. Cadiz at the other end of the Costa is a fascinating and historic city. The old citadel and port are well worth a visit. However, do not even think of parking in the centro ciudad; It’s impossible. Park at the end of the causeway and get a taxi or bus to Plaza Espana. Also on the list are the cities of Jerez, famous for sherry; and Seville, famous for being incredibly beautiful and cool. There are plenty of whitewashed Andalusian towns inland and lots of lakes and rolling countryside.
But back to the coast. What does it offer the naturist?
If you are looking for naturist heaven, then here is a place on earth. Virtually the whole of the Costa de la Luz is a continuous beach, interspersed with the occasional cala or cabo. And with the absence of the littoral development that has marred so much of the Playas de Espana, there are only a few resorts. So the right to sunbathe nude on any Spanish beach sees its ultimate expression here. As far as we could tell, you could strip off anywhere and no-one would bat an eyelid. While this makes the whole coast a naturist idyll, it also means you will be sharing the beaches with folk in various states of textility.
